It’s Nice Not To Think

You know how people always say that the best way to find your perfect job is to ask yourself what you would do if money wasn’t an issue?

I think that’s such a weird question.

Because no one would say that they want to be a janitor, or a lunch lady. Then, there would be messes all over the place and elementary children without food.

Some jobs are necessary, even though they don’t feel dramatic or life-affirming. I’m not really sure what this has to do with Lisa-Jo’s prompt. I think it’s because “If I knew I could, I would…” begs for me to tell my dreams. And dreams always seem like the answer to that question.

So, I ask myself, would I still be a stay-at-home mom? Because none of my current dreams have me changing a constant conveyer belt of dirty diapers, getting peanut butter smeared on my “I just put this on” shirt, or having “Mmmaaaaawwwwwuuuuummmm!!!!” screamed at me all day long. I want to write a book. I’ve said it before — it’s always met with silence, which seems like disapproval. I do. I also want to go to France, be a missionary and be fluent in a love language.

The thing is, had you asked me that question 10 years ago, when I was working full-time in an office with a crotchety old lady whose dream was to return to New Mexico with her family, I would have said I’d want to be a stay-at-home mom.

It’s a funny thing about dreams…

    1. Ok, we can call it the Honeybee Chronicles…get it? πŸ™‚

My Friday is very happy after all your encouragement! Thanks, Melissa! πŸ™‚

  2. Honestly, I just think you are the most wonderful writer. Tight, strong sentences that pack a punch and build on each other so beautifully. A quick fire challenge eh? What a great way to think of it! And I’m so so happy for you to hear you’re getting away to try your hand at more of this craft. Hope it’s just wonderful!

    1. You’re such an encouragement to me, Lisa-Jo! πŸ™‚ That’s why I like you so much. Your heart is genuine, and so caring. I’m very excited for my little conference tonight!

    1. I love this quote from Steven Pressfield “If you find yourself asking yourself (and your friends), ‘Am I really a writer? Am I really an artist?’ chances are you are.” {The War of Art} That’s what makes me think I’m a writer. Haha! πŸ™‚

      Now I’m smiling.

    1. Thanks Holley! When I first began reading your blog it was when you were writing about story…it was really an inspiration to me and helped me to focus more on the story God was building in me. πŸ™‚

  3. Dreams kinda remind me of how everyone in a former life was a Cleopatra, Julius Caesar, etc. No one wants to be the average person. I agree this prompt does sound like the life-affirming dream wishing kinda thing, but we still need dreams. Dreams change. Great post today!

  4. Start my own business and also teach stay at home moms how to be entrepreneurs at the home and earn some income.

  5. Honestly? Too many things!! Travel, write a novel (been wanting to do that since I was a kid), act on Broadway, show my son the world while I home school him.

    1. Every once in a while I get the itch to sell all of our stuff, buy a motorhome and travel the US with our kids. Then I remember I have FOUR!! And memories of the six week trip my dad took my brother, sister and me on come wafting back. I like my home much more then. Haha! I would love to travel though. πŸ™‚

  6. Be fluent in a love language-hahahaha Okay, so honestly, I’m not the biggest fan of the love language thing. But, this totally made me laugh. Just so you know, my love language is Starbucks. I think you already speak that one fluently. hehehe

Have an amazing time at the writing conference! My hubs will be with the boys all weekend while I’m off on the women’s retreat. πŸ™‚

  7. I wish I could do Five Minute Friday without thinking!! πŸ™‚ I over-analyze!

Great post… funny thing about my dreams… pretty sure being a mom of 4 kids in 4 1/2 years was never on my radar! Still trying to figure out what God wants me to do

    1. Whoa! I thought we had ours close together. πŸ™‚ Sounds like God wants you to be a momma for a while. πŸ™‚

  8. You can write a book. People write books all of the time who have children and who are stay at home moms. Who says you have to settle for one dream?

    Okay…my turn…

I’ve worked so long in jobs I had to have that I considered this question for long moments recently and I still don’t know. What would I do if I could work any job in the world? I don’t know. Writing is my dream and I am working on that dream now. However, my day job becomes the question of the day. I just don’t know.

    1. It does get a little overwhelming when we consider just how many things there are to do! πŸ™‚ Good luck while working on your writing dream, Nikole!

  9. Sweet words, Melissa! All in 5 mins!

If I could, I would – be in Italy in right now with my beautiful wife, eating incredible food and napping. Rinse and Repeat.

  10. You are just incredible, and I cannot wait to read your book because yes, you already are a writer! πŸ˜‰ Praying for you..and actually hoping that we will really get to “meet”one day….

  11. If I knew I could, I would… buy a domain name and start selling my art online? No, I have no idea. I suppose I still have to figure out what it is I really want besides love and experiences with those whom are the objects of said affections.
