“So, as those
who have been
chosen of God,
holy and beloved,
put on a heart
of compassion
kindness,
humility, gentleness,
and patience…”
Colossians 3:12

This weekend I got sick…really sick.
As a mom, I’ve grown accustomed to the idea (which doesn’t mean I accept it, I am just resigned) that life must still go on. Regardless of how I’m feeling — emotionally, mentally, physically or spiritually — I’m still the mom.
Saturday was one of those days when life could not just go on.
I haven’t been that sick in a really long time! Even when I was nauseous a few months ago with morning sickness, I still got out of bed each day and tried to maintain a semblance of order in our home. This time…my body gave up.
Luckily it was a Saturday, which meant that my husband was home. Unluckily for him, he is swamped with homework. This last semester of Bible college — in addition to full-time work, full-time family and part-time cooking school — is really taking its toll on him.
In the midst of my misery Friday night I could only think, “Josh is going to have a really bad day tomorrow.”
It was worse than I thought. Not only was I sick, our daughter woke up sick as well.
Without hesitation, he stepped up to the challenge with grace, love and not a word of complaint.
He let me sleep. All. Day. Long.
Kids were fed, diapers were changed, meals prepared and issues resolved without me having to be present. Somehow he still also managed to get a large amount of homework done. He’s amazing!
Today (Thank God!) I’m feeling better…and he’s the one sick in bed; sleeping. All. Day. Long.
Time for me to repay the kindness…

Love in action, to be sure.
This is gospel kindness with the skin on. Good post.
Actions speak so much louder than words. What a great and loving example of kindness.
Thanks Bridget! And thanks for providing an opportunity to share with others how kind of a husband I have. π
Glad you are feeling better! You hope these days are few and far between, but how good to know that he can do it when he has to…
Good job loving each other so actively.
I’m so thankful I got better before he got sick too. π God was really watching out for us. It’s so hard when we’re I’ll at the same time. Thanks for the comment.
It is so wonderful to experience a testimony of a strong marriage that truly knows what it takes to show your love in actions not just words. Thank you for sharing this today.
Thank the Lord for Husbands who step up to the plate and help like that! I’m glad you’re feeling better, and I know your hubby will appreciate the mutual love shown!
I agree! Praise God our whole family is finally healthy again though.
I great husband is a great blessing.
Amen to that! I don’t know what I’d do without him.
Kindness gets right into the situation with the person. Kindness suffers with those who suffer, struggles with those who struggle and works with those who work.
That’s beautiful! Thanks for sharing.
Aw, so glad you got to sleep. Isn’t nice to have such a wonderful husband? Mine would have done the same. Get well soon!
It was wonderful! I’m very lucky to have such a wonderful husband. π
good kindness story!
Thanks!
Whata guy! Great illustration… thanks for sharing.
Your husband sounds an awful lot like my husband! I have no idea how I would function without him. He’s the BEST gift. π
We’re both lucky then! I know I function less smoothly when he’s not around.
Well, glad you are feeling better. And your husband is only doing what I am sure you do for him, but without expecting him to write a blog post about it…
It’s still those simple acts of kindness that hold the family together.
Your so right. Those small things are what make us a family. Glad you stopped by!
Ah, yes, share the misery; share the kindness. π
Larry
In a house with small children your apt to share the misery, once one person is sick the rest are sure to follow. π Hopefully we’re spreading our kindness around just as quickly.
Great story about kindness being the gift we give to help others heal.
Really cool!
Thanks for sharing it.
What a great way of putting it! My husband’s kindness really did help me to heal. Thanks for your comment!
Awww. It is so nice of your husband to bless you in a practical way! When us mommies go down.. we really go down, don’t we? π … At least, I feel that way about getting sick since I’ve become a mom. Before, I wouldn’t mind too much. More tv, reruns, and vegging out. Those days are gone!
btw, I love your new avatar, Melissa! Now, I know you’re a cutie! π
I used to love getting sick. π It was an excuse to be lazy. Maybe that’s why I get so frustrated when I’m sick now. Haha!
