The grounds from the day before sit pressed down and drained of flavor in the basket. There is an inch or two of brew that remains untasted as well. I dump, rinse and wipe to take away any staleness that tries to linger.
Refilling the pot with fresh, filtered water, I try to decide if it’s a 4-cup day or a 6. Usually stopping somewhere in the middle, I’d rather have too much than not enough. Spooning the whole beans into the grinder, Ezra covers his ears saying it’s all too loud. The aroma of fresh grounds scent the kitchen, and he asks over and over if it’s my “Foffee.”
I wait for it to finish, since it’s broken it takes twice as long, but it will do for the month we have left here. My Seattle mug sits waiting, filled with too much creamer, because I drink creamer with coffee and not the other way around.
Finally it’s ready and I pour to combine the light with the dark in a swirl. This cup will last me the entire day, reheated and refilled once half-full. Kinda like me, it gets a quick zap here and a jump-start there.
And the next day we’ll do it again.

This was sweet. Sometimes there is comfort int he every day routine, filling the coffee mug, measuring it out,… simple pleasures in the every day of it all. Blessings to you and yours…
Thanks, Kris! Right now the every day is comforting as we look forward to complete transition in the next month. π
you’re speaking my love language lady!
great post.
It’s an acquired one for me. My fourth child was the catalyst for my learning to love it. π
My mouth gapes as I read this (and a little sheepish smile, for it is just coffee)! You wrote nearly verbatim my coffee routine. From the grounds setting in the basket, to the amount to dump out, to the amount of coffee you will decide to make (between f and 6 cups and go with in between), to the cream waiting for your coffee. Every day. I’m with you!
Ha! That’s awesome! Nice to know I’m not alone. π
I followed you over from April’s Blessed Beyond Measure and her post on encouragement. I’m a little surprised to find that you put your cream in after the coffee, any good coffee drinking veteran will tell you you gotta’ put the cream in first so that it swirls perfectly with the hot, poured from a fairly high altitude, coffee in the perfect “mix.” Or it could be that I’m just a little lazy and don’t want to dirty another spoon…
The job of a mom is the most important one in the world. The strongest most prepared people in life are the ones who’s mom’s got them that way. Keep up the love and perseverance, someday they they’re going to appreciate it.
Any friend of April’s is a friend of mine, glad you stopped by, Floyd. π
As for the coffee, I do put the creamer in first, it keeps me from having to clean another spoon (as you said). Haha!
Creamer? Yuk! real coffee is drank black and if really needed with milk. No sugar.
Maybe someday I’ll work my way there…but for now I NEED that creamer! Haha! π I should take out stock in International Delights.
Haha- I don’t drink coffee, but I totally love this one! π
I didn’t start drinking coffee until last year, but it is a morning ritual for me now. π I blame it on my four small children and seven years of sleep deprivation. Ha!
Awesome ode to coffee!
Blessings
Thanks! π Glad you stopped by!
Oh yes! My husband also likes a little coffee with his creamer. But at least it’s got a name, and an au lait coffee is scrumptious! I too love my hot drinks, be it straight coffee, latte, caramel machiotto, or hot tea. Relaxation at its finest!
As I type this response I’m making myself a (decaf) chai tea latte, it definitely is relaxing! π I’ll have to start calling my coffee an “au lait” too! π
Loved this! I loved the part about reheating….I just went to the microwave to heat some tea and found my mug of coffee from earlier today!:) Oh, I wish I would have had time to drink it. Thanks for the creative post!:)
Haha! I do that all. the. time! I usually stand there for a minute weighing whether or not it is too late in the day to re-re-heat it and drink it. Thanks for stopping by!
I have never learned to love the taste of coffee, but your routine sounds terribly familiar anyway. And seriously? Is there a nicer smell than just-ground coffee beans? I have threatened to buy coffee just to have the scent in the air π This was really nice…I agree with Kris above, a sweet little post.! Happy Friday:)
It was definitely an acquired taste for me; one I’m still acquiring. That’s why I need so much creamer! π Thanks for popping in, and happy Friday to you, too!
love seeing your pics friend. Love even more that you drink coffee with your creamer – me too!
Mmm! Now I’m craving some, but I think it’s too late in the day. Maybe I’ll have to partake in some decaf English breakfast (is that an oxymoron). π
