I’m Trying to Become a Writer

I’m trying to become a writer.

For the last few months I have done all within my power to learn more about the craft of writing. Stephen King told me in On Writing to “not come lightly to the page.” Anne Lamott showed me that the act of writing turns out to be its own reward; that publication shouldn’t be my end goal. Her book, Bird by Bird, revealed to me the ideas of short assignments and {cough} “poor” first drafts. According to Steven Pressfield, art is war and resistance is the enemy within. He encouraged me by saying, “If you find yourself asking yourself (and your friends), ‘Am I really a writer? Am I really an artist?’ chances are you are.” Because I ask myself that question all the time.

I soon discovered that learning about writing didn’t make me a writer…Click here to find out what I discovered it takes to actually become a writer, an artist, a leader and even a Christian.

Today I have the privilege of guest posting at author, Mary DeMuth’s blog! I was able to sit down with Mary at the writer’s conference I attended in April, and she is as encouraging and friendly as she seems in her writing.

Did you know that I have a Facebook page for this here blog now? I wanted a place to connect with one another through updates and happenings, quotes, photos and links as I come across them! Just click here to join me, and don’t forget to click “like” at the top of the Facebook page to stay alerted to all this and more!

  1. I couldn’t agree more with your realization that the act of writing is the reward and we should not write with publication as the only goal. Of course, publication is nice, but if the joy of writing isn’t the focus, it can be a hollow process. Good luck to you!

  2. “The act of writing turns out to be its own reward”. So true! Every time I think about publishing my WIP, I suffer from writer’s block, I’m unable to write or even to take notes. So, good luck with your book.
Oh and BTW, you’re a writer as soon as you start to write; an unpublished writer but a writer.

    1. Thanks, Claire. I’m actually not writing anything other than blog posts and the occasional guest post for others right now. I’m hoping to delve into magazine work soon, but a book seems daunting to me. Maybe a little ebook would be fine. :) I’m still dealing with that whole confidence thing. Haha! Good luck with your WIP, and don’t let the writer’s block overcome you!! :)

    1. Speaking of writers, I was packing up my old magazines this weekend and came across my stack of Radiants. I loved that magazine! Flipping through them, I saw you!! It was so fun to read your article and to now have a connection to you. :)

    1. Whenever anyone asks me for writing resources, those are the three I suggest. I learned so much from them! Thanks for stopping by, Betsy!

  3. I love that you are posting at Mary’s site… she is such a “writer encourager” :) love both y’all’s hearts!
